Dhakuria’s Treasure

A small market area of Dakshinapan in Dhakuria (a place in south-Kolkata), serves as a treasure chest of handicrafts from almost all parts of India, be it handmade jewellery, furniture, carpets, wall-hanging, or clothes. Since 1300 BC i.e during the Harappan civilization, Indian sculptures, potteries, jewellery have been worldly renowned. With the passage of time, as the landmass was invaded, captured and rule by people from different parts of the world, the art of Indian crafting got various dimensions to it. Like the carpets of Kashmir received a Persian style of stitching and the tales of Ramayana and Mahabharata got weaved in shawls and sarees. Dakshinapan is one such place that still storehouses this ancient art form of crafting.

Crafting is a mode of storytelling, where the craftsmen express their beliefs and imagination and reflect upon their daily chores of life, through their highly-skilled fingers. Crafts from all over the country- Kashmir, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Bengal, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Meghalaya, etc- is showcased for you to understand the cultural diversity that the landmass homes. Moreover, you can bag any of it you want at a very affordable price. Be it the royalty of a Mughal teapot, or a simple tribal necklace from Odisha, all is available for you to take home as a souvenir.

About Lovely

Kolkata has an ethnic flavour that harmoniously co-exists with the fast-paced life of the people. I am a student of literature and I love to explore art. I believe, the best place to explore art is not in the galleries, but in the open-air markets of South Kolkata.
