Astrophile – Lunar Eclipse

The lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth and Moon lie in a straight line (called “Syzygy”) which causes the Earth’s shadow to fall on the Moon. The lighter shadow is called “Penumbra” and the darker shadow is called “Umbra”. Penumbral eclipse is not detectable from naked eyes. A total lunar eclipse is when Moon is completely engulfed by the Umbra. However, the Moon doesn’t appear completely dark during a total lunar eclipse as some sunlight creeps in due to refraction from the Earth’s atmosphere. This is also the reason behind the Moon appearing reddish during a total lunar eclipse.

The Total Lunar Eclipse on 31st January from Mumbai will start with the Moon below the horizon. This means that the Moon will be already eclipsed when it rises from the Eastern horizon. The various stages of the eclipse occur are given below as per India Standard Time (IST):

Penumbral Eclipse begins at 16:21:13, Moon below the horizon
Partial Eclipse begins at 17:18:27, Moon below the horizon
Full Eclipse begins at 18:21:47, Moon below the horizon

Moon rises at 18:33

Maximum Eclipse at 18:59:51
Full Eclipse ends at 19:37:51
Partial Eclipse ends at 20:41:11
Penumbral Eclipse ends at 21:38:29
