Today, 2nd April marks International Fact-Checking day. We believe that factchecking shouldn’t be something only professional fact-checkers do. An accurate information ecosystem requires everyone to do their part. Below is our part in providing minute facts about three heritage structures in Fort.

Yazdani Restaurant & Bakery

Yazdani Bakery

A bakery and restaurant displaying the plaque of Urban Heritage Award for the 20th-century building given by the Indian Heritage Society in 2007. They do not have a concept of the menu. Few of their offering and rates are written randomly on the walls. This pagoda type building was once a Japanese bank before becoming Yazdani Bakery in 1953.

Zara building in Fort

Zara building in Fort

Ismail building, inside which Zara showcases its offerings, was actually earmarked for demolition ten years ago because of its dangerous condition. However, local heritage restoration architects Kirtida Unwalla and Mona Sanghvi along with Zara’s in-house team worked tirelessly for two years to restore it to its former glory. The building follows an Edwardian Neo-Classical style of architecture, which is why you will notice typical characteristics like the grand use of space, dramatic columns and intricate Roman-inspired details.

Britannia & Co.

Britannia & Co.

The moment you enter this place, you know it is going to be unique. The checked tablecloths, the menu on those tablecloths secured with a glass top, a simple rooster for the menu, the same Bentwood furniture that were imported from Poland during it’s early years, interior made by Japanese carpenters, life-size cut-outs of Prince William and Kate Middleton, India’s flag along with Iran’s flag and the Union Jack… the list goes on and on.

Boman Kohinoor, also known as Britannia Uncle runs this place. He personally takes orders, talks to everyone how they like it. He loves British Royal Family. He even invited the Queen to try their Berry Pulao from whom he received a signed letter. The biggest twist of tales happened when a video of his wishing to meet the royal family went viral. So he got to meet Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Kate Middleton at an out-of-schedule meeting at the Taj Mahal Palace hotel.
